Pitara plans radio, TV shows for kids
Publication: The Hindustan Times Date: April 24, 2001
Pitara Kids Network Private Limited is in talks with major TV broad caster, including STAR TV, SONY and Zee TV for selling animated programmes.
Talking to Hindustan Times, Pitara CEO Ajay jaiman said, "We have approached all of them and are in various stages of talks with them. Obviously, we would not be very keen to buy airtime on channels, we would rather sell content".
This is a part of the company's long-term strategic plans and will take time to materialise, he added.
Started as a dotcom for the children, the company is going to launch radio broadcast service for children on the Internet this July.
Since the company has already invested in studios and voice recording facilities, the cost of launching radio services would to be a marginal 2-3 lakhs per month.
Interestingly web-based radios have not been very sucessful till now globally because of the poor voice quality over the Internet.
Jaiman, however, said that he hoped to do well because there is no radio service specifically addressing the children.
The web-based radio, targeting children below 13 years of age, will be available on pitara.com website.
The types of programmes broadcast will include news especially for the children, original poems, voice animated stories, book reading and excerpts and Indian folklore.
The company is also launching e-shopping venture, animation CDs and Krowser software in the month of May. Krowser a safe browser for kids, will also be launched in the US once a channel partner is finalised.
ICICI holds a 30 per cent stake in pitara while the remaining is held by Ajay Jaiman. The investment in the company have been about of Rs. 10 crore.
The expected revenues for financial year 2001-02 are Rs. 3-5 crores. Pitara expects to break even in the fourth quarter 2001-02.
