Krowser: Saviour On the Net
Publication: The Times Of India Date: February 6, 2001
Imagine yourself going out for work and leaving your seven year- old son alone at home with his computer. You might expect that your son will browse the sites, which will help him with his homework. And in all probability if he is not playing games on the computer, he will make good use of the Internet. But what if by chance, your seven- year-old darling stumbles upon a site on nude actresses. There is no dearth of such porn sites on the net. That's where Krowser, software launched by Pitara kids Network Pvt. Limited, comes in.
In the unregulated world of the World Wide Web, this company promoted by some former media professionals, has launched a website called pitara.com.
The browser can be freely downloaded from there by clicking on the "Krowser" logo and subsequently following some simple steps.
The kids browser or Krowser, as it is aptly named, has a database of 18,000 sites, which are deemed safe for kids by the company. The software also collects requested sites that are not in the database and slots them in a queue for reviewing by trained people and expert editors employed by the company.
Parents have whole-heartedly accepted this software. The Krowser has received accolades from people worldwide. Says Sandeep Sangar, a regular net surfer and a concerned father, "these types of ventures are really good and should be encouraged". The software is quite failsafe and is ideal for use in residences and schools. It can even be set up as an integral part of an Internet Service Provider's account.
Once the Krowser is installed, it disables your existing browser, thereby proving a smart kid's effort of accessing an objectionable site through an alternate browser, futile. However, the alternate browser can be reinstalled by uninstalling the Krowser.
