Pitara's safe surfer targets the US geek child

Publication: Business Standard
Date: December 2, 2000

The New Delhi based www.pitara.com, the kids portal from Pitara Kids Network Pvt. Ltd. is actively looking at taking Krowser - a specialised software that guarantees safe surfing experience for child users, to the US market.

According to a senior official of the company, initially, the company will try to market the Krowser product through tie-ups in the US market and at a latter stage will also set up a subsidiary of Pitara in the US.

www.pitara.com, founder and CEO, Ajay Jaiman, told Business Standard that the company was actively considering alliances with interested parties in the US to market the Krowser product.

"The Krowser once installed, will ensure that a child will not be able to access a website which has pornography, or hate and violence driven material posted. The biggest market for such a product would be in a country like the US, where PC penetration is one of the highest", Jaiman, said.

The Krowser is a software that replaces the conventional browser, like Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator, and in real time checks for the appropriateness of the site being requested by the user.

The company is also developing the next version - 1 of Krowser, which will see more functionality.

In the present version of the Krowser, the parent can see it up in such a way that a child cannot access other browsers and hence cannot access inappropriate sites. It can also be set up as an integral part of an ISP account.

Pitara.com expects the sales of Krowser to substantially boost its revenues. In the next couple of months, the portal will also introduce a shopping channel for the company and is expected to sell books, toys, software etc.

Pitara which got an undisclosed amount of funding from ICICI Ventures nine months ago for a 30 per cent stake in the company, is at present getting 10 million hits and 1 million page views per month.
