If divers surface too quickly after a dive, they may suffer from what are called the 'bends'. Their air supply contains nitrogen gas which dissolves in the blood. If divers rise too fast, the nitrogen forms bubbles in their blood, causing very sharp pains and even death. The bends may not happen until as many as 18 days after a dive.
