When two prairie dogs meet, they exchange a sort of 'kiss' to find out if they know each other. If they do not, the intruder is driven away but if they do, they 'kiss' again and then start grooming each other. Prairie dog burrows are guarded by sentries who sound the alarm with a series of whistling barks if an enemy is seen.
