A Polynesian legend tells how the world was created in a gaint clam. At first, there was only a sea and a goddess, Old Spider. She picked up a gaint clam and looked inside it. There she found two snails and a worm. She made the smaller snail the Moon and the larger snail the Sun. Half the clam shell became the Earth, the other half the sky and the worm's salty sweat the sea.
