Many birds that feed on plants swallow stones and grit to help their bodies grind down the plant material. Birds in captivity may swallow other things if they cannot find stones. An ostrich in London Zoo was found on its death to have swallowed an incredible variety of things. These included an alarm clock, 91 cm (3ft) of rope and a selection of coins.
